what makes a good reader

What Makes A Good Reader?
After reading Vladimir Nabokov’s article “Good Readers And Good Writers”, I learned a few things that he believes makes a good reader. He says, “in reading, one should notice and fondle details” (613). I agree that the reader should pay very close attention to the details of the material he/she is reading so you get the full effect of the story. Secondly, he states that “a good reader, a major reader, an active and creative reader is a rereader” (615). I most definitely agree with him on that. I have to reread a lot! I think it is very important because every time I reread, it seems as though I understand what I am reading better. Sometimes I even get something different out of the story when I reread it, or even catch something I didn’t get the first time. Next, Nabokov says that “the best temperament for a reader to have, or to develop, is a combination of the artistic and the scientific one” (616).
I agree almost 100 percent with Vladimir Nabokov on what he thinks makes a good reader. I also think that a good reader should be patient, not want to speed through the material, open minded and focused. To be completely honest, I think that I could be a better reader than what I am now. I seem to get sidetracked a lot and that is why I have to reread a lot! I am a better listener and writer than I am reader. I enjoy reading books sometimes to try and relax before bed but sometimes it is hard for me to focus.
